CATAPA werkt reeds sinds 2005 rond de sociaal-ecologische impact van mijnbouw. Fair ICT Flanders is een 3-jarig project, gefinancierd door de Vlaamse overheid. Meer info op: fairictflanders.be

 

Context

Het produceren van ICT-producten zoals smartphones, computers en laptops heeft een erg grote impact op mens en milieu. De ontginning van metalen en mineralen nodig voor deze producten gaat vaak gepaard met mensenrechtenschendingen en ecologische destructie, de assemblage van laptops en smartphones gebeurt in lageloonfabrieken waar arbeidsrechten niet gerespecteerd worden. De gebruikduur is zeer kort en het ontwerp van ICT is niet gericht op hergebruik van de onderdelen, waardoor er een gigantische e-waste afvalberg ontstaat. Daarnaast is bijna vier procent van de wereldwijde uitstoot van broeikasgassen afkomstig van de ICT-sector.

 

Doelgroep

Dit project richt zich op de grote consumenten van ICT-producten in Vlaanderen. Hogeronderwijsinstellingen, lokale overheden en bedrijven kunnen als grote consumenten van ICT een belangrijke invloed uitoefenen op ICT bedrijven om hun productieketen op een structurele wijze te verduurzamen. Dit kan door sociale en ecologische criteria te hanteren bij aankoopprocedures. Een duurzaam ICT aankoopbeleid kan een belangrijke hefboom zijn tot een betere wereld.

 

Doelstellingen

Fair ICT Flanders beoogt dat bedrijven, overheden en hogeronderwijsinstellingen concrete stappen ondernemen om een duurzaam ICT-aankoop- en hergebruiksbeleid te ontwikkelen. Dit alles met het oog op een duurzamere toekomst en de verbetering van de werk- en leefomstandigheden van getroffen gemeenschappen in de extractivistische en ICT-productiesector in Latijns-Amerika, Azië en Afrika.

 

Methodiek

Binnen het project zal er aan de hand van verschillende werkvormen een intensief begeleidingstraject aangeboden worden aan pilootinstellingen. Er zullen leerplatforms uitgebouwd worden, webinars, toolboxen,…om aankopers binnen de organisatie te kunnen begeleiden. Het gezamenlijk leerproces en de uitwisseling van goede praktijken tussen de verschillende instellingen
zullen inspirerend zijn voor uw ICT-beleid.

Fair ICT Flanders

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/MlY109sIIHY” align=”center”][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=”11551″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]This project is run by the non-profit organization CATAPA vzw, the umbrella organization of Flemish environmental groups Bond Beter Leefmilieu (Society for a Better Environment) and Ondernemers voor Ondernemers (Entrepreneurs for Entrepreneurs) and aims at improving the sustainability of ICT procurement and reuse policies in Flanders. Since 2005, CATAPA has been dealing with the socio-ecological impact of mining. Fair ICT Flanders will run for three years and is financed by the Flemish government.

 

Context

The production of ICT devices such as smartphones, computers and laptops has a substantial impact on people and the environment. The extraction of the metals and minerals needed for these devices often involves human rights’ violations and ecological destruction; and assembling laptops and smartphones takes place in low-wage factories where labour rights are ignored. The useful life of these products is very short and ICT design is currently not aimed at reusing the smaller parts they are composed of, which results in a gigantic volume of e-waste. Besides, nearly 4 % of global greenhouse gas emissions originate from the ICT sector.

 

Target group

The project is aimed at big ICT consumers in Flanders. Institutes of higher education, local governments and enterprises might play a considerable role in influencing ICT companies to make their supply chain more sustainable in a well-structured way. The use of social and ecological criteria in procurement procedures is therefore essential. Sustainable ICT procurement policy may function as an important leverage for a better world.

 

Objectives

The project Fair ICT Flanders intends to make companies, governments and institutes of higher education take tangible steps to develop sustainable ICT procurement and reuse policies. The ultimate goal is to achieve a more sustainable future and better labour and living conditions of communities impacted by the extractive and ICT production sectors in Latin America, Asia and Africa.

 

Methodology

Based on a variety of working practices, the project will offer an intensive guidance trajectory to pilot institutions. Learning platforms, webinars and toolboxes will be developed in order to guide procurement officers within their organizations. Both the shared learning process and the exchange of good practices among the various institutions will inspire future ICT policy.

Ya desde el año 2005, el funcionamiento de CATAPA está centrado en el impacto socio-ecológico de la minería. Fair ICT Flanders es un proyecto que durará 3 años y está financiado por el gobierno de Flandes.

 

Contexto

La producción de dispositivos TIC como los smartphones (teléfonos inteligentes) y los ordenadores portátiles tiene un impacto enorme sobre las personas y el medio ambiente. La extracción de los metales y minerales que son necesarios para la producción de estos dispositivos suele ir de la mano de violaciones de los derechos humanos y una destrucción ecológica.  Por ejemplo, en las fábrica donde se realiza el ensamblaje de los smartphones, los trabajadores están mal pagados y sus derechos no son respetados. El tiempo de vida de los dispositivos TIC es muy corto y estos no están diseñados para reutilizar sus componentes, lo que resulta en una enorme montaña de desechos electrónicos. Además, casi el 4% de las emisiones globales de gases con efecto invernadero provienen del sector de las TIC.

 

Grupo objetivo

Este proyecto se centra en los consumidores a gran escala de productos TIC en Flandes. Las instituciones de enseñanza superior, los gobiernos locales, y las empresas consumen dispositivos TIC en gran cantidad y tienen entonces una gran influencia sobre las empresas productoras de estos electrónicos. Con la implementación de criterios sociales y ecológicos en los procedimientos de adquisición se puede hacer más durable la cadena de producción y suministro de las TIC. Una política de compras durable en el sector de las TIC puede llevar a un mundo mejor.

 

Objetivos

El principal objetivo del proyecto Fair ICT Flanders es lograr que las empresas, los gobiernos y las instituciones de enseñanza superior tomen medidas más concretas para concebir una política de compras y de reutilización de las TIC. Esto sería un paso muy importante para alcanzar un futuro durable y sostenible, así como la mejora de las condiciones laborales y de vida de las comunidades afectadas en los sectores de producción de las TIC en América Latina, Asia y África.

 

Metodología

Como parte del proyecto se presentarán un trayecto de orientación a las instituciones piloto a través de diferentes modos de trabajo. Este trayecto incluye plataformas de aprendizaje, webinarios, paquetes de herramientas, etc. que servirán para ayudar a los compradores dentro de la organización. El aprendizaje mutuo y el intercambio de experiencias entre las diferentes instituciones inspirarán su política de adquisición de las TIC.
